PVC Layflat Hose for African Irrigation: Sizing, Pump Matching & Buying Guide
Across Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Southern Africa, more farms are irrigating with petrol, diesel and solar pumps — and the blue PVC layflat water hose is the discharge line most of them run on. It coils flat, one person can carry a 100 m roll, and it costs a fraction of rigid pipe. This guide covers how to size it, match it to your pump, and buy it direct from our factory on FOB terms.
What African Irrigation Asks of a Discharge Hose
- • Heat and UV: open-field service under intense sun — a non-stabilized hose hardens and cracks within a season.
- • Engine and solar pumps: the hose must connect straight to centrifugal pump outlets with camlock or BSP fittings, no plumbing crew required.
- • Distance: water sources are often far from the plots; rolls are joined end-to-end for 200–500 m runs.
- • Handling: seasonal repositioning between fields means weight and coil size matter as much as pressure.
Choose Diameter & Pressure by Application
The most expensive mistake is an undersized hose: back-pressure builds, flow drops, and the pump wears early. Use this table as a starting point (full range: ID 1"–14", working pressure 2–18 bar):
| Application | Recommended ID | Working Pressure | Typical Roll |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smallholder plot (up to ~1 ha), low-head pump | 1.5" (38 mm) | 2–4 bar | 50 m / 100 m |
| Medium farm transfer, petrol/diesel centrifugal pump | 2" (51 mm) | 4–6 bar | 100 m |
| Main discharge line, multi-hectare schemes | 3" (76 mm) | 6–8 bar | 100 m |
| Borehole-to-tank transfer, higher lift | 4" (102 mm) | 8–10 bar | 100 m |
| Flood drainage, construction dewatering | 6"–8" (152–203 mm) | 8–12 bar | 50–100 m |
Match the Hose to Your Pump
- Outlet diameter = hose ID. A 2" pump outlet takes a 2" hose. Reducers create pressure drop and fitting stress.
- Working pressure ≥ pump's maximum head pressure. Engine centrifugal pumps usually sit in the 4–6 bar range; high-lift or 300 m+ transfers need 8 bar or more.
- Solar DC pumps run gentler. Low-pressure 2–4 bar light-duty layflat is usually enough — no reason to pay for pressure you never use.
- Quote working pressure, not burst pressure. Our burst pressure is at least 3× the working rating — that safety margin is already built in.
Built for Hot, High-UV Climates
Our layflat hose uses a UV-stabilized PVC coating over a high-tenacity polyester jacket — formulated for long outdoor exposure in tropical sun, mud and rough ground. Three constructions cover the pressure spectrum:
The cost-effective workhorse for farm irrigation and general drainage.
For mine dewatering, fire water supply and high-lift transfer.
Two-tone layers make parallel lines easy to tell apart on large schemes.

Buying FOB from Our Factory: How It Works
1. Specify before you price. Send ID, working pressure, roll length, quantity and coupling needs. "2 inch, 6 bar WP, 100 m rolls, camlock fitted" gets you a firm quote in one round.
2. Sample first. We ship sample sections so you can pressure-test against your pump before committing to a container.
3. Production & QC. ISO 9001 process control; every batch pressure-checked before packing. Rolls are film-wrapped and pallet-free loaded to maximize container space.
4. Documents. Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin — plus any destination-specific papers your clearing agent requires.
5. OEM branding. Private-label printing along the hose and custom colors help distributors build their own brand locally.
FAQ
What size layflat hose do I need for a 2-inch water pump?
Match the hose inner diameter to the pump outlet: a 2-inch pump outlet takes a 2-inch (51 mm) layflat hose. Never reduce at the joint — the back-pressure cuts flow and shortens pump life. For runs over 200 m, stay at full diameter and choose 6 bar working pressure or above.
Is blue PVC layflat hose OK for drinking water?
Standard blue PVC layflat hose is designed for irrigation and discharge water. For potable water transfer, ask us about food-grade liner options — do not assume any blue hose is drinking-water safe.
How does the hose hold up in Sahel and East African heat?
Our layflat range uses a UV-stabilized PVC formulation rated for continuous outdoor service in high-radiation climates. Store rolls shaded when not in use, and avoid dragging charged hose over sharp gravel to get multiple seasons of service.
What is the difference between working pressure and burst pressure?
Working pressure (WP) is the safe continuous rating; burst pressure (BP) is the failure point in testing — ours is at least 3× WP. Always quote working pressure when ordering: 4–6 bar suits most engine pumps, 8 bar+ for high-lift or long-distance transfer.
Can you pre-fit couplings before shipping to Africa?
Yes. We supply layflat hose with camlock or BSP couplings pre-assembled and pressure-checked, or loose for local assembly. Private-label printing and custom colors are available under OEM/ODM service.
