Mining, Fire and Chemical Hose Selection Guide

Industrial hose failures are often caused by using a general-purpose hose outside its intended duty. Mine dewatering, fire water and chemical transfer each place a different combination of pressure, abrasion, static, heat and chemical exposure on the hose. The application specification should come before the price comparison.

Key takeaways

  • Use high-pressure layflat or reinforced hose for demanding mine dewatering and slurry lines.
  • Use a dedicated fire hose for fire-water service; do not assume an irrigation hose meets fire standards.
  • Use anti-static construction for appropriate fuel and chemical transfer, and verify chemical compatibility.
  • Confirm pressure, temperature, abrasion, electrical conductivity and coupling requirements in writing.

Mine Dewatering and Abrasive Slurry

Mine lines often combine high pressure, abrasive solids, long runs and rough ground. A heavy-duty reinforced layflat hose or a suitable rubber layflat construction may be preferable to a light irrigation hose. Check working pressure and wall construction, and allow for surge and pump pulsation.

For suction from a pit or sump, use a hose rated for vacuum. For slurry, confirm the maximum particle size and abrasion level. A smooth bore helps flow, but abrasion resistance and reinforcement determine service life.

Fire-Water Service

Fire hoses are normally specified by diameter, length, working pressure, jacket material, lining, coupling and the applicable local standard. A hose used for irrigation or general discharge should not be assumed to meet a fire-service standard merely because it can carry water under pressure.

Confirm whether the hose will be used for firefighting, standby water transfer, washdown or fixed fire protection. These duties have different acceptance, inspection and storage requirements.

Chemical and Fuel Transfer

Chemical compatibility is material-specific. The supplier needs the chemical name or concentration, temperature, continuous or intermittent exposure, and cleaning method. An anti-static hose addresses static discharge but does not automatically provide universal chemical resistance.

For fuel, solvent and chemical transfer, check the liner, cover, reinforcement and electrical construction. Confirm whether the hose is intended for suction, pressure or both, and use appropriate grounding and bonding as required by the site procedure.

The Information Needed for a Safe Recommendation

Provide media, concentration, temperature, required flow, operating pressure, suction lift, run length, particle content and site conditions. State whether the hose will be dragged, vehicle-crossed, coiled, stored outdoors or used in a hazardous area. Add the required coupling standard and any local certification.

A product name is not a complete specification. The more precisely the risk is described, the easier it is to choose a hose that is fit for the job and to avoid costly trial-and-error.

Frequently asked questions

Can an irrigation hose be used for mine dewatering?

Only if its pressure, abrasion and handling ratings suit the mine duty. Light irrigation hose may be unsuitable for rough ground, high head, slurry or continuous operation.

Does anti-static mean the hose is safe for every fuel or chemical?

No. Anti-static construction addresses one hazard. Chemical compatibility, temperature, pressure and grounding procedures must still be checked for the exact product and application.

Can I use a standard layflat hose for fire fighting?

Use a hose specifically intended for fire service and confirm the local standard, working pressure, jacket, lining and couplings. A general water hose is not automatically a fire hose.

Need help matching a hose to your pump or project?

Send the hose type, inside diameter, working pressure, roll length, coupling standard and destination. Yongli can recommend a suitable construction and prepare an FOB quotation.
